While this quote from Jack Yelton is incredibly funny, it is also incredibly true of some gamblers, and there are a lot of strange stories regarding people who have walked into land based casinos, only to be really stupid and lose a lot of money. We don’t hear a lot about silly stories like these from the world of the online casino, but then again people’s anonymity is protected online, so too is their stupidity.
One of the most famous stupid gamblers is William Lee Bergstrom and we have spoken about him previously in his relationship to Binion’s and Sons. He was offered the chance of a lifetime to win, and he did, only to throw it all away, including his life.
But what about Ashely Revel, unlike Bergstrom, he could not raise a million dollars to place on one bet, but he still decided he was going to wager all his life savings and everything he owned on one bet on the roulette table. This young man wanted to play at Las Vegas and he did, he sold everything including his bicycle and all his clothes to raise $135 000. He took the money to Las Vegas, where the casino warned the public, this is not the thing to do and he place his bet on the red to double his money.
The wheel spun and Ashley Revel won, strangely enough his ball landed in the red 7 pocket. Now the difference lies in what Ashely did with his winnings, he took it and started an online casino company called Poker UTD, and this is what differentiates the Ashley Revels from the William Lee Bergstroms. Everyone was waiting for new bets from him, but he had his five minutes of fame, tipped the dealer $600, said thank you and left!
This is what winners are made of and we can all learn a lesson from this young man. Time and again we hear from online casinos that winners know when to stop playing because in the long term, only the casino wins. In the short term if you pick up your money and run, you have essentially won against the casino. He had fun, nerve wrecking as his moment was, but he wasn’t going to chance his luck a second time.
He did however do one stupid thing; he changed his name by deed poll to Ashley “Blue Square” Revel, after the casino operator who partially funded him. But I suppose when you take chances in life there are both pros, and cons. Blue Square by the way, is a leading UK online casino.
