Differences in Online Casino Software

Download vs. No-Download Software

One of the first decisions you need to make when you decide to play at a casinos is whether you want to download casino software or not. I will explain a little of the differences between the two versions and give you my recommendation.

No-Download Casino Software

This is a little bit of a misnomer when it comes to "No-Download" software. There is a java based software that is browser based and does not require any special type of software on your computer. The other type of "no-download" software requires your computer to have a simple "Flash" or "Shockwave" plug-in, that most likely is already installed on your computer. If it is not installed, you will be directed to install this simple plug-in with a short download. Most casinos offer their software in a "no-download" version.

The biggest advantage of a no-download version is that it can be played from any computer and typically works well with WebTV and Mac's. One of the disadvantages is that the no-download software lacks the graphic quality and the overall "casino-feel" of the download version.

Download Casino Software

The typical downloadable software casinos only runs well on Windows based computers and requires anywhere from 5-15 megabytes of space. Most download software gives you the option of a quick start download or a full version. The quick start version typically download the basic software and the most popular games where the full download version downloads all the games. The advantage of the download software is that it provides a better overall gaming experience and is more stable and secure. The main drawback is that the software must be installed on any computer you wish to play on.

My Recommendation

I recommend installing the "Quick Start" download version of software for the best, most realistic gaming experience. I like the fact that typically the download version is more stable and secure and once installed requires only minimal communication between your computer and the casinos server. Once the "Quick Start" version is installed it is very easy and time efficient to download additional games that are offered.

Software Companies

The major casino software companies include Microgaming, Playtech, Real Time Gaming, Cryptologic, Boss Media and OddsOn/Vegas Technology. The industry leader is Microgaming with the largest number of casinos utilizing their software. Microgaming also has a "Viper" version of their software which provides better graphics and faster play. Playtech is the up-and-comer with a growing base of casinos, poker rooms and bingo halls. The other software companies, although not having a huge base of casinos, offer some very high quality casinos like award winning InterCasino and English Harbour Casino. The bottom line is that it is the integrity and reputation of the management of casinos as much as the software that determines the casinos that I recommend. For that reason, you can feel comfortable gambling at any of the casinos I have recommended.
