History

The history of gambling on the banks of the Mississippi traces back to a lot of time in the era of the American Indian. Most popular bet of those times was on the Stickball or the Ishtaboli. This primitive game involved the participation of two teams who strived to achieve the maximum points. These points were termed as the goals. Which are struck on the opposite teams’ side. The players employed the sticks. Since the time the Europeans and the Africans established themselves in the Mississippi region the rate at which the wagers grew was remarkable. Somewhere around the year 1790 the Mississippi was the possession of the Spanish rulers, this brought in the Horse-gambling. In the year 1830 the population growth rate increased and so did the gamblers. This started the earlybilliard, cockfightings. After the Civil war was called off, and number of the hotels in the area also grew with equal impetus a support by the local bodies. They provided the necessary patronage to these gambling areas.

The Velez Hotel in Biloxi was one of the former hotels build in the year 1920 to host the gambling actions. The Broad water Beach Hotel was built in 1938. Since the advent of the newer technologies the year 1990 saw the growth of newer and far better equipped gambling.
