California Tribes Celebrate Casino Compact As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "Representatives of the Big Lagoon Rancheria and Los Coyotes Band, as well as of Detroit development partner BarWest Gaming LLC, held a celebration Thursday night at the Harvey House in order to commemorate Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's signing of compacts Sept. 9 with the two tribes.
"Barstow Mayor Lawrence Dale, Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Darling and Gov. Schwar-zenegger's representative Larry Grable gave speeches at the event, and tribal representatives Virgil Moorehead, for the Big Lagoon tribe, and Kevin Siva, for the Los Coyotes, also made remarks at an event attended by more than a hundred people. "…Prior to the official ceremonies, Mike Malik, one of the principals of BarWest, said the proposed casino project would be a boon for the state of California, since it could draw in gaming tourists who might otherwise head to Nevada to gamble. But Malik stressed that BarWest is not attempting to turn Barstow into the new Las Vegas; the proposed project is specially tailored to fit into the community…"
