Calder Race Course Cancels Live Racing Calder Race Course ("Calder") has cancelled its live race cards scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, and Friday, Oct. 28, and will be closed for simulcast wagering through Thursday, Oct. 27. The Miami-area racetrack has closed temporarily as it awaits the restoration of electrical power and begins on-site repairs related to Hurricane Wilma.
Calder sustained some damage to its stable area and clubhouse as a result of Hurricane Wilma, which passed through South Florida on Oct. 24. The racetrack property remains without electrical power. "The clean-up and repair process is underway," said Calder President Ken Dunn, "and we hope to resume daily simulcast operations as soon as possible after electrical power is restored. We decided the best course of action was to cancel live racing on Thursday, Oct. 27, and Friday, Oct. 28, in order to expedite repairs to our main facility and stable area, and to ensure both the dirt and turf courses are ready for the resumption of live racing. We appreciate the patience of our customers and horsemen as we work to reopen our facilities." Calder Race Course, located on South Florida's Miami-Dade / Broward county line, offers Thoroughbred horse racing and wholecard simulcasting during two consecutive meets. The track is home of the Summit of Speed, Festival of the Sun, Florida Million and Grand Slam series of events. A wholly owned property of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), Calder also operates the Tropical at Calder Meet. In 2005, the Calder Meet runs from April 25 through Oct. 16, and the Tropical at Calder Meet runs from Oct. 17 through Jan. 2, 2006. |
