Video Poker Video Poker
Definition and Introduction –
Video Poker is the casino game (based on the five-card draw poker), played on a computerized console, which is similar to a slot machine.
History of Video Poker –
Video Poker became commercially viable when it became possible and economical to connect a television like monitor to a solid state central processing unit. The primitive earliest models came into picture the same time as personal computers in mid 1970’s.
With the introduction of draw poker on 1979 by SIRCOMA (Si Redd’s Coin Machines) (which went on to become International Game Technology), video poker was established firmly. It became increasingly popular in the 1980s in the casinos. As of date, it has a prominent place at many casinos, especially at Las Vegas.
More about Video Poker –
Video Poker are programmed to deal the cards randomly under state regulated jurisdictions. Cards are generated for each game, five dealt to the hand and five more are dealt when the player requests. The regulation regarding the video poker based on Nevada regulation adopted by all other states with the gaming authority requires these machines to deal the cards as randomly as real within the limitation set by the gaming authority. Before the video poker are offered to the public, they are tested for their compliance with this regulation.
How is a video poker played?
As against a slot machine, where a coin is inserted and the game is played by pressing the play button, in a video poker, cards appear on a screen and there are five buttons for each card. The player can decide which card to hold, none or all five with the aim of holding the best or the highest hand. When these buttons are pressed the word ‘hold’ can be seen on the selected cards. Next, the player can press the ‘deal’ button and on the screen, a new set of cards replace the old set which are not chosen to be held. If the player makes a best combination with the cards, the machine awards him the credits on the basis of the payout schedule, and the ‘player paid’ sign appears on the screen. The credits equal the value required to play the machine.
When the game starts all over again, he can bet the units or coins he wants to play on the next hand and press the ‘deal’ button. To end the game, he can press the ‘collect’ button and collect his credits.
Types of Video Poker Machines –
Some of them can be named as – Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus, Deuces Wild, Joker Wild, All American.
