As reported by the Kalamazoo Gazette: “The Gun Lake Tribe launched a
newspaper ad campaign Sunday to raise awareness of its fight to build a
casino in Wayland Township.”It was a year ago today that anti-gambling group
Michigan Gambling Opposition — portrayed as a masked robber in the
newspaper ad — essentially halted the Gun Lake Tribe’s bid to develop the
casino when it filed suit against the U.S. Department of Interior, which
manages American Indian lands in the United States. “The Gun Lake Tribe —
officially known as the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi
Indians — announced in 2001 its intention to build a casino in Allegan
County. “The ongoing court battle seeks to prevent the government from
placing more than 140 acres of land near U.S. 131 into trust as a tribal
reservation, land the Gun Lake Tribe wants to use, in part, to construct a
gambling facility.”
