As reported by the Arizona Star: “A union-led group is picketing for higher
wages and benefits for construction workers at a casino-hotel project on the
Tohono O’odham Reservation. “Members of Carpenters Local 1506 stood in front
of the Desert Diamond Casino, 7350 S. Nogales Highway, near a 20-foot-long
banner that said ‘Shame on Desert Diamond Casino, Labor Dispute.’ “On
Wednesday and Thursday, the group members passed out fliers, criticizing
Desert Diamond Casino, the Tohono O’odham Nation, Kitchell Construction and
Universal Wallboard Corp. for paying ‘substandard’ wages and lobbying for
better health-care and pension benefits for construction workers. “.The
union plans to stay at the job site until contractors and the tribe agree to
demands, said Phil Evans, a union representative.”
