Addiction foundation Winnipeg Gambling
There are a myriad of
people, who gradually become addicts of gambling and
wish to free themselves from its clutches. The Addiction
Foundation of Manitoba at Winnipeg (AFM) carries of the
work of rehabilitating such needy people. It has 23
offices distributed in three regions. It desires to
improve the health of people by decreasing the harm of
not only gambling but also alcohol and drugs by
education, prevention and research. Dr.T.A.Pincock, the
Director of Mental Health Programming for the Province
of Manitoba, started it in 1944.
Work of the Addiction Foundation
The issues are managed
by a Board of Governors consisting of fifteen governors,
which are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in
Council of the sitting Government. This Board decides
the Policies, Vision, Mission, Values and Strategic
Directions of the operations of the AFM. There are
several offices in Winnipeg, of which the Gambling
Services office is situated at 1031 Portage Avenue. The
AFM believes that their biggest support is their staff
and values the dignity, diversity, and capacity of each
of them and strives to build a safe and respectful work
environment. The AFM desires to strengthen the core
business, promote a healthy and vibrant atmosphere,
improve as leaders in the addiction field and show
accountability. The Foundation pledges a biopsychosocial
model of addiction. AFM realizes the permutations of
interactions of the varying biological, psychological
and social factors for addicted people. It provides a
model for clinical and prevention practice of the needy.
AFM generates annual reports in English and French which
are available online. The Strategic Planning for the
coming years is also developed and posted online.
Professionals and organizations can rely upon any of
AFMs prevention education staff to provide information,
assess, discover options and develop an action plan for
gambling addicts. Consultation and training requirements
develop customized training relevant to the particular
organization or person. AFM mentions that in the long
run people lose money in gambling rather than winning
it. This is because those who run gambling businesses
devise them to earn money. AFM states that the elements
of randomness and house advantage ensure that all
results in gambling are impulsive and the operator makes
an overall profit. AFM calculates the cost per hour of
play for each player. Various myths and mistaken beliefs
have been diagnosed.
Warning Signs
AFM has detected that
for some people
gambling is an innocuous way of recreation. Ten
signals indicating that the individual has lost control
on him and has developed a habitual, compulsive need for
gambling have been found out. People with these signals
should take assistance of AFM.
