A
word on gambling addiction:
Gambling on the Internet or online gambling, as it is
popularly known as, is becoming an increasingly popular
form of gambling, and there are now an estimated 1,700
gambling websites on the Internet. With the popularity
already skyrocketing newer innovations in the gambling
world one cannot use the Internet but also gamble
through interactive television and a mobile phone. The
features that makes online gambling appealing to
everyone includes the convenience of gambling at home,
the ease of setting up a gambling account and the
variety of forms of gambling - from traditional betting,
to casino gambling, bingo and lotteries. Studies and
online surveys have found out that even though many
people gamble online without any problems there has been
a considerable increase in the amount of people
contacting help lines and counseling services who are
losing control of their gambling online. This compulsive
gambling condition is termed as pathological gambling
that starts as a pleasurable experience turns into an
uncontrollable destructive craving. Pathological
gamblers do not understand the problem and they are not
left with nay choice but gamble.
The negative side of online gambling:
There are many
negative aspects of online gambling. Here we are
just going to discuss some of the most significant and
the prominent ones. The first and the most crucial issue
is the potentiality for fraud over the Internet. Many
gamblers provide their credit card numbers and social
security numbers that can be vulnerable to fall into the
wrong hands of thousands of hackers or criminals over
the Internet. The second issue is the problem with
online gambling is the ease with which children can
access cyber-casinos especially the easy accessibility
stems, in part, from the pervasiveness of the Internet
in homes. The third problem and perhaps the most that
comes into concern is the rise in gambling addictions
due to online gambling mainly because of the detached
gambling environment on the Internet. The last but
certainly not the least is the need to protect the state
revenues generated by legal and state-run gambling
operations as the state profits from taxes on the
winnings and the net revenues from legalized gambling.
