Effects of gambling in sports
Game of shame!
Sports, right from Greeks to the present day Olympics
has been considered a social
Event, which instills in
an individual the values like integrity, sportsmanship,
fellow feeling and a will to win, are now at the mercy
of gamblers. The increasing use of gambling in sports is
threatening the very integrity of sports. Although sport
gambling is illegal in almost every state, there has
been a push over the last few years to legalize it. One
concern is how sports gambling have affected the
integrity of the game. Illegal gambling has already
adversely affected sports.
Sports gambling take
place, even though it is illegal is an obvious fact. Can
you imagine your favorite team losing to a poor team
because of gambling? The problem of sports gambling is
that there are a lot of chances of losing. Sports
gambling has affected sports by introducing organized
crime into the sporting world. The FBI has
reported that $2.5 billion is gambled on the NCAA
Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament each year.
The danger of gambling on
sports is the risk of addiction. Betting on the horses
gets addictive. The joy after winning can lead to a
false confidence. The desperation and faith of fans in
their favourite is increased after the gambling
surfaces. Instant money through gambling on sports means
that the sportsman is more prone to gambling in future,
and more reliance on bookies
so in fact bookies might
one day control the entire game rather than the people
directly involved in the game.Gambling brings with it
all kinds of evils like organized crime, suicides, and
other family problems.
The advocates of gambling
say that gambling brings thrill but they don’t tell that
it is also losing more and getting indebted and broke.
The effects of gambling on the sportsman are far more
dangerous than on the fans of the game. The sportsman
can lose his hard earned respect and fame for some easy
bucks. In Asian countries where cricket is considered as
religion bookies have created havoc by betting involving
the cricketers some of whom are now facing ban for life.
If players are influencing
the outcome of the game they are bringing nothing but
shame.
The
effects of
gambling in sports are that they prove as an
obstacle in popularizing the game, thereby reducing the
chances of expansion of the game.
