Effects of gambling casinos
Casino gambling has become a major industry in the
United States over the years with a turnover of $27
billion in 2001. The effects of casino gambling are good
as well as bad. The sunny side of gambling casino is
that it is considered as a tool for economic growth.
The legalization of gambling casino in some counties has
meant profit for the government tax department. The good
effects of casino gambling are
1.There is a growth in employment.
2.The government has increased tax revenue.
3.There is a growth in local retail sales.
4.
Casinos create jobs for accounting, dealing cards,
security professionals.
Bankruptcies increased in the United States between 1994
and 1998. The activity that caused personal financial
crises and that has also experienced dramatic growth is
casino gambling. Research shows that the nearness to
casinos increases rates of problem gambling in the local
population. Some studies show that the locations of a
casino within 50 miles of an individual’s home can
double the occurrence of problem gambling.
Casinos increase crime. Casinos attract large numbers of
visitors to an area, and increases overall numbers of
people in an area who can commit crime. A study found
the effect of gambling on heart rate and salivary
cortisol in a casino environment. Ten male gamblers
participated in the experiment; gamblers played a game
of Blackjack using their own money. Gamblers played
cards in the same setting however the game was played
for accumulation of points rather than money. Heart rate
increased. Salivary cortisol was also increased.
Casinos fuel crime and personal bankruptcies, and hurt
other businesses.
The effects of casino
gambling are deadly on employment, such activities as
clothing stores, recreation services, business services,
auto dealers and service stations the casinos mark a
decline in these activities. In Atlantic City,
homelessness increased after the opening of casinos,
nationally jobs are lost at the tune of 1.5 jobs for
every job the casinos creates. Legalized gambling costs
the taxpayer $3.00 to tackle the increased
socio-economic costs to society. The City of Detroit,
known to be heavily dependent upon gambling revenue, has
laid off more than 5,500 government workers. There is a
constant increase in theft, family offenses, and drug
abuse in cities with a legalized casino gambling.
Casino gambling increases
problem gambling in addition it also has a fair number
of cases relating to divorce and suicides in cities with
casino gambling.
No doubt
casino gambling
creates more socio-economic problems but it promises to
create a good or sustainable economic growth.
