Gambling on College Sports:
The
fun that’s turned to shame!
College and sports are indispensable, sports in colleges
help to build values and character.
The
activities of sports in college are not only a great
thrill but also a huge show of youth enthusiasm and the
spirit of competition. The growth of gambling has caused
a noticeable increase in the number of sports
gambling-related cases processed by the NCAA and
threatens the integrity of college sports.
The
FBI estimated that 2.5 billion dollars was
gambled on the 1995 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball
Championship.
Student-athletes are viewed by organized crime and
organized gambling as easy prey for this activity.
A
study by the University of Cincinnati of 648 Division I
intercollegiate men's basketball and football
respondents indicated that 25.5% had gambled on other
college sporting events, 3.7% had gambled money on a
game in which they had played, and that 0.5% received
money from a gambler for not playing well.
The
scale at which gambling is influencing college sports
should be taken as a warning sign
for
the good health of college sports.
Effects of Gambling on College
Sports:
Creates a dependence on
those who are commonly known as bookies. This dependence
on bookies leads to other related problems for e.g. if a
student athlete is addicted to gambling the bookies
exploit him for their own gain. Gambling in college
sports introduces organized crime and the malaise
related to crime follows which corrupts the young
sportsman’s mind.
Gambling in college sports
threatens the very integrity of sports and sporting
ethics. Can you imagine your favorite team losing to any
poorly prepared team? Scandals at Boston College or
Tulane illustrate how gambling has affected the
integrity of athletes, coaches, and colleges.
Athletes loose their
eligibility if they are found gambling in college
sports. Sports gambling debases the competition and
competitors alike by a message that is detrimental to
the purposes of sport. Gambling on college sports will
turn away spectators who are the very patrons of any
game, and we will have a fixed game!
Gambling on college sports
has its disastrous effects not only on the game but also
on the individual’s career. The fame, respect, and
ethics of sports are at stake in gambling, which the
betters don’t seem to understand.
A law has been made to
check the growing influence of
gambling on college
sports which may control this malaise.
