Gambling Impact:
Gambling is considered as the highly addictive activity
and Americans are facing lots of problem due gambling
addiction. Though gambling is familiar as a leisure
activity but it slowly induces the Americans and they
become addicted with it. Gambling has very bad impact on
gamblers. It effects on his family and work place as
well.
Family members frequently experience the trauma of
divorce, child abuse and neglect, and domestic violence
due to gambling addiction problem.
Gambling Impact Study:
There are immense need of study or research of gambling
impact. United States has done a study by its National
Gambling Impact Study Commission in 1999 which was the
first comprehensive assessment of gambling's effects on
the United States in 23 years. This report helps us to
understand the negative effects of gambling.
The final report of National Gambling Impact Study
Commission (NGISC) states that gambling addiction in the
United States increases with expansion of gambling
activity. The gambling activity has higher rate
addiction problem of in comparison with any other form
of addiction. The report shows that between 15 and 20
million Americans are displaying some signs of a
gambling addiction.
Specific Impact of Gambling:
NGISC find out some specific impact of
gambling from their study and research. These impacts
are:
Suicide:
Suicide is a major problem for gambling addiction.
Addicted gamblers often try to commit suicide. A survey
on nearly 400 Gamblers Anonymous members done by NGISC
shows that two-thirds had contemplated suicide, 47
percent had a definite plan to kill themselves, and 77
percent stated that they have wanted to die
Divorce:
Divorce is the next considerable problem which arises
due to gambling addiction. In a survey of nearly 400
Gamblers Anonymous members, 28 percent reported being
either separated or divorced as a direct result of their
gambling problems. No of divorce case increases in USA
after introduction of casino gambling.
Homelessness:
Individual having gambling problem has higher rate of
homelessness than any other form addiction, according to
NGISC report. In Chicago 33 percent gambler become
homelessness due to gambling problem.
Child Abuse and Neglect:
The National Gambling Impact Study Commission reported:
“Children of compulsive gamblers are often prone to
suffer abuse, as well as neglect, as a result of
parental problem or pathological gambling”. During the
study there are so many child death case found in US due
to parent’s gambling activities
According to the National Research Council between one
quarter and one half of spouses of compulsive gamblers
have been abused in US.
So, these are the impact find out by the
National Gambling
Impact Study. Therefore to remove theses problems
govt. should take some precaution or effective steps.
