Gambling Addiction:
Gambling is nothing but a leisure activity, which
normally played for fun. But now gambling is no longer
considered as a leisure activity due to its addiction by
a large number of people. Gambling is become a problem
for us. Compulsive gambling is considered a form of
addiction. Compulsive gambling can destroy social,
personal and occupational or educational performance of
a gambler. What does compulsive gambling mean?
Compulsive gambling refers the gambling attitude of a
gambler who is compelling to gambling without which he
can’t survive. Actually compulsive gamblers are addicted
with gambling behavior and they loss control,
preoccupied, compulsivity with gambling.
Treatment for Gambling Addiction:
Gambling addiction is a
behavioral addiction which treated to prevent the
relapse of gambling behavior. There are different
treatment therapies for gambling addiction.
Psychoanalytic, behaviorist, cognitive, and biological
therapists will all provide treatments differently.
Counseling, education, medication are different
treatments which effective on gambling addiction.
Medication:
Medication has shown some
potency towards treatment of gambling addiction in
recent years. Researcher has already found out some
medicine for other forms of addiction like alcohol
addiction, drug addiction etc. Antidepressants such as
Prozac, Zoloft, and Luvox may help decrease the carving
of gambling. Clomipramine also has been reported to
reduce pathological gambling. Medicines such as
Naltrexone (ReVia), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine
(Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac), and citalopram (Celexa)
may help you control your thoughts, urges, and behaviors
which may effective in controlling gambling addiction.
There are two drugs called as lithium and divalproex
sodium (Depakote) which regarded as mood stabilizer
which may help you to prevent gambling behavior.
Antipsychotic medicine such as olanzapine (Zipper),
risperidone (Risperdal), or quetiapine (Seroquel) may
also be helpful.
When you approach to a
doctor for your gambling addiction problem doctor will
assess the nature of your gambling problem as well as
other related psychiatric problems such as depression,
anxiety, substance abuse or other addictive disorders.
After considering hyperactivity of your problem he will
prescribe you medicine as above mentioned.
Psychotropic medicine is
also help in controlling of gambling addiction that help
gambler to overcome depression and isolated behavior.
Lithium carbonate and anti-convulsants are commonly used
to help pathological gamblers. These drugs help the
individual control their craving to gamble.
But
always remember one sentence, prevention is better than
cure. Prevention is considered as the best
medicine for
gambling addiction. General public should be aware
of bad impact of compulsive gambling in order to control
the increasing number gambling addiction.
