Dangers of Gambling
Gambling has now reached far and wide. Gambling, which
was initially confined to a few casinos has reached
millions of homes through the internet. This has
resulted in a tremendous increase in the number of
gamblers all over the world. This has also resulted in
the spread of harmful effects of gambling with an
increasing number of people getting adversely affected
due to gambling. Pathological gambling is just another
aspect of how gambling has some disastrous effects on
the people.
What is Pathological Gambling?
Pathological gambling is the most serious form of
problem gambling. Pathological gambling is explained
with the help of the following factors:
1)
An
individual suffering from pathological gambling is
always thinking about it. He is continuously planning
about the future games or is thinking about the past
games. There is no thought in his mind except for
gambling.
2)
He
is not able to control himself or restrict himself from
gambling. While restricting himself he becomes very
irritable and frustrated. He eventually fails to
restrict himself.
3)
He
gambles in order to escape from problems.
4)
He
wants to gamble more in order to earn back the money
which he has lost.
5)
He
lies to his family about his gambling and hides his
gambling losses and other gambling problems.
6)
As
he keeps on losing money after continuous gambling, he
becomes bankrupt. To get more money, he resorts to
illegal ways like theft, fraud, forger etc.
7)
The individual’s professional life too is adversely
affected and he may end up losing his job.
8)
He
relies on others to provide him money to relieve a
desperate financial situation caused by gambling.
Treatment
People suffering from
pathological
gambling can be treated of this problem. There is a
great role to be played by the State and social service
organizations in this process of treatment.
Rehabilitation Centers too are important for
pathological gambling treatment. Several awareness,
prevention and educational programs are also vital in
the treatment process. It is vital that the individual
is made aware of the harmful consequences of
pathological gambling and is given full support to
overcome the problem. It is necessary that he gains his
pride and self-esteem in the process of treatment.
