Gambling problem: an outlook
When a person develops an obsession for gambling then
the person can be said to get addicted to gambling and
it can cause problem for him as well as his family. It
can cause disruptions in any major area of life:
psychological, physical social as well as vocational.
Gambling a progressive addiction characterized by
increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet
more money and quest to earn more money in no time. On
the other hand it might give rise to some negative
consequences such as becoming a pathological gambler
Reasons for gambling
Few centuries ago gambling was only restricted to dice,
but now due to advancement of technology gambling has
ventured with information technology revolution. This
has given rise to online gambling. People are also very
comfortable with this as need not have to move out from
their home and can bet from their living room. Gambling
is also becoming a fashion for high profile socialite.
Consequences of gambling problem
A recent research study is being done by national
opinion research centre at the University of Chicago.
From the study they estimated that due to excessive
gambling 2.5 million adults have become pathological
gambler and 3 million are considered to be problem
gamblers. These people has lost everything and is
declared bankruptcy and to have been arrested or
incarcerated. Pathological and problem gamblers in the
United States cost society approximately $5 billion per
year and an addition $40 billion in life time costs for
productivity reductions, social services and creditor
losses. However these calculations are inadequate to
capture the intra-familial costs of divorce and family
disruption associated with problem and pathological
gambling.
Some organizations involve in anti gambling activities
1. National council on
problem gambling:
it is a national advocate for programs and services to
assist problem gamblers and their families. The mission
of NCPG is to increase public awareness of pathological
gambling and ensure the widespread availability of
treatment for problem gamblers
2. The gambling helpline New Zealand is the national
free phone ongoing motivational support, referral and
information service for gambling problems
3. The New York council on problem gambling is a non
profit independent corporation dedicated to increasing
public awareness about problem and compulsive gambling
and advocating for support services and treatment for
persons adversely affected by gambling.
4. Gam care: it is a registered charity and has become a
leading authority on the provision of information,
advice and practical help in addressing the social
impact of gambling.
