The age-old game of gambling has truly come
off age now. You don’t have to go to some obscure casino in your town, to
fulfill your gambler’s urge. It can be done right at home, sitting in front
of the PC. You can make or break a fortune, sitting right at home. And if
you are under the misconception that it won’t be a real experience then you
are wrong. These websites are truly magnificent virtual reality getaways.
With state of the art graphics, animation,
bonuses, tournaments, exciting offers, jackpots and money cash outs and what
not! Online gambling has gained increasing popularity among various age
groups primarily due to these reasons. But like every good thing, even this
one has given rise to a number of problems. In fact many psychologists and
debt advisers are alarmed at the problems of this new age gambling
technique. Gambling was always addictive, but addiction has taken another
perspective in case of online gambling.
Problems of online gambling according to
statistics
One of the most disastrous effects of online
gambling according to the debt advisers is that more and more students have
gotten into the habit and are thus racking up humongous amounts of debts
These students sit for hours and although some of them earn tidy profits,
many are in deep debts. One of the addicts was caught with a debt running up
to a shocking 25000 dollars. Another problem of online gambling is that,
because of the financial problems, these people end up with psychological
problems and thus have devastating mental and emotional effects.
According to the statistics this problem is
mainly with the isolated students who have left home for the first time, and
have no idea how to use their freedom.
Online gambling statistics also show that the CCCS (consumer credit counseling service)
counsels close to 2,000 to 3,000 people every year to get them out of this
habit. According to the findings of the National union for students, the
students run up these debts because they try to earn supplementary income
for themselves.
How can the problem be solved?
Basically gambling is a harmless way of
having fun, but for those who get addicted to it, there are treatments and
help available. Recent gambling statistics say that only about 4to 6%
gamblers become problematic. How ever, for those wanting to take help to get
rid of their problems, there are institutions like the National council on
problem gambling. Thus taking help and advice from them is the best option.
The mission of the national council is to increase awareness of the ill
effects that addiction to gambling can cause.
Due to these problems and negative impacts,
many countries including Australia have very strict gambling regulations.
