March 13, 2006
The Council on Problem
Gambling is to increase public awareness of pathological
gambling, ensure the widespread availability of
treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and
to encourage research and programs for prevention and
education.
Gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite
harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. The
preferred term among many professionals is problem
gambling, as few people described by the term experience
true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word.
Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is
experienced by the gambler or others rather than by the
gambler's behavior. Severe problem gambling may be
diagnosed as clinical pathological gambling if the
gambler meets certain criteria. The mission of the
Council on Gambling Problems is to raise public
awareness that compulsive gambling is a treatable
disorder, and to facilitate the development of a network
of services for compulsive gamblers and their families.
