Centres
Of Gambling Studies
March 12, 2006
There are various centers
for gambling
studies around the world, which are dedicated for
the scholarly analysis of gambling and gaming issues.
There are many unique primary resources that can be
found only within the Collection. This collection is a
storehouse of record for the commercial casino industry;
we preserve and make accessible company documents, state
publications, and other important resources. This
gambling collection is committed to providing support
for scholarly inquiry into all aspects of gaming. It
serves and acts as an unparalleled resource for
students, faculty, and independent scholars. Any body
interested in gambling research from students to faculty
members can use the collection. The various functions of
these centers include collection, storage and
preservation of primary research materials concerning
gaming and related issues. The centers also hold
responsibility to maintain the collection of gambling
related periodicals and serials. They also collect
unique historical material in the form of company and
personal manuscript collections and papers. Conducting
oral history interviews with those involved in the
gambling industry is also an activity of the gambling
study centers. These centers also provide assistance to
academic researchers; media professionals, industry
members, and the generally curious in answering research
questions about gambling related issues. Researchers can
gain access to archived materials in these centers.
Studies undertaken by the centers.
There are also various study programs organized by the
study centers. There are various purposes of carrying
out the study and the research. One of the main purposes
is addressing the basic questions in understanding
problem and pathological gambling. This is done through
a collaborative network of academic researchers and
treatment providers located throughout the state and at
a national level. When studies about pathological
gambling is done then the specific focuses are on
investigating the etiology, neurobiology, and
consequences of pathological gambling; developing and
evaluate new approaches to the treatment and prevention
of pathological gambling; moving empirically supported
treatments of pathological gambling into mainstream
application; supporting public health policy and
initiatives to ameliorate social problems related to
pathological gambling. Now several gambling related
studies and researches in the past decade have estimated
the addiction in the sector. Problem or Pathological
gambling percentage is up to 1% to 3%. It is intriguing
to know that a high-risk group largely ignored in this
research is college students. The college going lot may
represent a heightened risk for developing gambling
problems, as this section is associated with a wide
range of at-risk behaviors, including heavy use of
alcohol.
