The state of Oregon
invests over 5 million dollars annually to reduce the
negative effects of gambling. Its public health
framework incorporates prevention, harm reduction, and
multiple levels of treatment for the gambler and family
members. The Problem Gambling Services of Oregon
incorporate strategies that minimize gambling’s negative
impacts while recognizing the reality of gambling’s
availability, cultural acceptance, and economic appeal.
Oregon is nationally recognized as a leader in the field
of problem gambling services.
Prevention of Gambling by Oregon:
Prevention programs of problem gambling are aimed to
avoid or reduce the emotional, physical, social, legal,
financial, and spiritual consequences of problem
gambling for the gambler and family members. The
prevention efforts by Oregon use the framework of
prevention strategies. The Problem Gambling Services
co-ordinate actions to prevent gambling-related
problems, promote informed and balanced attitudes, and
protect vulnerable groups by promoting healthy public
policy and developing collaborative relationships
between various stakeholder groups. The Oregon Lottery
allocates about $1.2 million annually for public
awareness and education programs designed to make the
people aware regarding healthy and unhealthy gambling
behavior. Local prevention activities include programs
such as working with schools on gambling prevention
education, working with senior citizen groups on
gambling education, and incorporating gambling
prevention into activities aimed at other youth risk
factors.
Outreach Efforts by Oregon:
Outreach efforts by Oregon are aimed at increasing
community awareness about problem gambling so people who
need help and so can connect with the services needed.
Outreach efforts are done locally by prevention and
treatment specialists who help in increasing awareness
of problem gambling within the community by working with
community groups, schools, mental health programs,
alcohol and drug abuse programs, corrections departments
and other health organizations in this effort. At the
stat-level, the Oregon Lottery delivers a "Play
Responsibly" campaign on TV, radio, and print media
having a key message that lottery games are meant for
fun and entertainment and should be played as such. It
also highlights that that treatment is available when
gambling habits go out of control.
