Poker Robots

by Jerry "Jet" Whittaker

February 7, 2006

Recently, there is a big discussion between the poker community people about online poker robots that could be able to play online by it selves. Technically a Poker "bot" is a robot, which was first developed by The University of Alberta's Computer Poker Research Group. This robot could scan cards of its opponents by using screen scanning techniques and then respond in real time. Poker players are concerned about these robots as nobody is sure of how good the poker robot playing against them is! As always, there is a divided opinion abut the whole affair of poker robots. On the one hand, some people tent to wonder how a player can win against a robot, when and if it has been created to play poker perfectly, all the time. On the other hand, some people don’t mind the robots, claiming that a robot can only be as perfect as his developer. Anyways poker is a complex game and programming a good, always victorious robot is a very hard and nearly impossible task.

World Poker Robot Championship-

The growing popularity of poker robots lead to organizing of the tournament called world poker robot championship. This tournament was inaugurated in 2006. The stakes in the tournament were higher than merely the $100,000 pot that will go to the winning computer programmer. The tournament was originally called the World Series of Poker Robots. It was organized to shed light on one of the most challenging aspects of artificial intelligence: that is getting computers to solve problems when they're given incomplete and misleading information. The tournament was held at Binion's Horseshoe Hotel & Casino, which was the site of the final two rounds of the real World Series of Poker. The significant think about the tournament is that it draws out different ideas and techniques for creating artificial intelligence. This was the reason why many programmers were skeptical of bringing in their robot for participation. They feared the real ability of their robot will be exposed! Whether you are a poker robot hater or whether you think you can easily take on a poker robot, poker robot is an interesting invention. And it seems just the beginning!
