In
the past decade, rapid development and exponential
growth in the use of electronic, computer-based
communication and information sharing via the Internet,
particularly across the Western world has taken place.
There are many benefits that have resulted from Internet
usage. However, there is little recognition of the
dangers that also result from the use of such
technology. There is growing evidence that Internet is a
new medium through which some commonly recognized forms
of abuse are being propagated. It is leading to social
evil like addiction to gambling and even pornography and
child abuse.
Forms
of Internet Abuse in gambling -
Cheat
and fake gambling sites–
Many times gambling sites can be fake and can cheat you
of your money. The bet that you think you have placed,
may have not been placed in reality. Also online
transactions can be highly tricky. Some people have
reported to have got huge surprises in their credit card
bills. They placed a bet for say 100 dollars but the
bill has 1000 dollars that has been taken from their
account. Online transactions especially by credit cards
are being avoided by genuine gambling sites and by banks
issuing them also. However amateur online gamblers
continue to be fooled by gambling sites who rake in his
money.
Gambling addiction and gambling from workplace –
gambling online has also created a host of gambling
addicts who can’t stop placing bets. Gambling addiction
is a problem not only for the gambler himself but also
for his family and for the society in general. Gambling
from the workplace is another problem that has come up
recently. Employers and personal managers have reported
to have problems in controlling their employees’
behavior. New monitoring technologies have come to be
employed for monitoring and controlling gambling from
the workplace.
There are
other forms of
internet abuse also. Pornography is one form of
internet abuse which is creating problems. There are
various pornographic sites t which even children can
access and which need to be controlled.
