Legislative leaders created a committee Monday to help oversee the state’s expansion of gambling. Earlier this year legislators authorized state casinos in four areas and slot machines at dog and horse racing tracks. The Kansas Lottery will own the new operations but it will hire developers to build and manage them. Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt said the panel will act as ‘a one-stop shop’ so that oversight isn’t spread among several committees. The Independence Republican said it will make oversight easier as the lottery drafts rules for the new gambling and reviews contracts with potential casino developers. Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley said he was skeptical of the need now for such a committee because expanded gambling is in its infancy. The first applications for potential casino developers aren’t due until Nov. 13 and lottery officials say it will be two to three years before any casino is operating. ‘In time we need to have a permanent oversight committee ‘ said Hensley a Topeka Democrat. ‘I just question the timing whether there’s enough to have oversight over.’Lawmakers to oversee gambling's growth
