When Should You Stop Gambling?
Obviously, it does look a trifle odd to find a piece about when a person should stop gambling in a website that definitely promotes gambling. However, we should all bear in mind that gambling is an activity of leisure, and people are supposed to have fun while gambling. On the other hand, when gambling becomes an addiction that hurts not just the gambler but the people around him or her, it no longer becomes a fun and leisurely activity, and for that addicted gambler, the time has come for him to stop.
It is hard to say when gambling becomes an addiction, but this list should give you hints and signs as to when you should stop gambling.
1. Stop gambling if it has become your preoccupation. Have you begun to devote a considerable block of your time to gambling, whether online or in a land-based casino? Is gambling all you think and talk about nowadays? Are your thoughts always filled about how you can win more money gambling and how you can get more funds to sustain your gambling?
2. Stop gambling if you start trying to stop (and fail constantly). When you are addicted to gambling, you often tell yourself that this will be the last game you shall ever play. And yet, despite your promises to yourself, you fail to make a follow-through with what you have promised to stop.
3. Stop gambling if you start getting a physical high out of it. Addiction to gambling works just like addiction to drugs or alcohol. You get a very physical high out of the experience, regardless of whether you are winning or losing. In fact, winning or losing no longer becomes a serious matter for you once you get addicted to gambling.
4. Stop gambling if it has become your excuse to escape. Another sign of addiction to gambling is that when it becomes your outlet to some pain or frustration that you cannot express. In some people, gambling represents a kind of relief that is akin to eating your favorite comfort food.
5. Stop gambling if all you ever do is to try to regain your losses. Losing money is a reality with gambling. Some people are hooked into gambling because their minds are focused on trying to get back what was lost instead of simply winning or having fun.
6. Stop gambling if it has taught you to lie. You know you have been gambling far too much when you start lying and becoming defensive to the people who care about you about the time and the money you spend on gambling. Lying about gambling only opens a painful cycle that will only make things worse and even lead to your isolation. Gambling is supposed to be a social pastime, after all.
7. Stop gambling if you find you cannot talk to your family and friends anymore. The biggest indicator that you should stop gambling is when it has taken over a considerable amount of your time, so much that it has already isolated you from your family and friends or has affected your performance at work.
Gambling is a leisure activity and it is supposed to be fun. The fun stops, however, when addiction sets in.
